Stop “Not getting your hopes up”

We’re often taught to protect ourselves by lowering expectations.

To say:
“I really want this… but I’m not going to get my hopes up.”

But here’s the truth:
That mindset splits your energy.

It makes no sense to walk into a room, give your whole heart, and simultaneously rehearse disappointment.

If you want something — want it.
Be specific.
Let your body feel the desire.
Let yourself imagine it.

Clarity + openness is powerful. Being openhearted and available in an audition room is what people remember.

And here’s what most dancers miss:
Even if this isn’t your role because of height, type, casting balance, logistics — the panel remembers the person who was grounded, present, and emotionally available.

When the right role comes?
They remember.

The goal isn’t to detach from wanting.
The goal is to stay connected to yourself while you want.

Desire is not weakness.
Attachment to outcome is what dysregulates us.

In Part 2, we’ll talk about how to regulate your nervous system so you can stay open without spiraling.
